There are many different types of resins used in the production of composites. The material has been tested on two factors: how much flame spread and how much smoke is emitted. Profile selection<\/strong><br>Here you select the type of profile you want to analyze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Dimension<\/strong><br>Here you select the dimensions of the selected profile type. Dimensions are given in mm as H-height, B-width and T-thickness, in the menu our available and stocked profiles are listed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. E-modulus (MPa)<\/strong><br>E-Modulus(MPa) is the unit of elasticity that describes the stiffness of the profile. For our fiberglass profiles, the stiffness will be 24000 MPa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4. Load profile<\/strong><br>Here you choose how the load should be distributed on the profile. The following options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Load Case 1 \u2013 load applied in Newton (N), as a concentrated load in the middle of the profile clamped at both ends.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Load Case 2 \u2013 load applied evenly distributed over the entire profile in Newtons per meter (N\/m) on profile tensioned at both ends.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Load Case 3 \u2013 load applied in Newton (N), as concentrated load at the end of the profile tensioned at the opposite end.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Load Case 4 \u2013 load applied evenly distributed over the entire profile in Newtons per meter (N\/m) on a profile tensioned at one end.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5.Density(g\/cm3)<br><\/strong>Density (g\/cm\u00b3) is the density of the material, weight per volume. This value is pre-filled with 1.8 g\/cm\u00b3 (1800 kg\/m\u00b3) which applies to profiles produced by pulling the profile through a forming tool (pultrusion).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>6. Length (m)<\/strong><br>Here you enter the profile length that is exposed to load. For load cases 1 and 2, the length between attachment points \/ support is used. For load cases 3 and 4, the protruding length is used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>7. Distributed load (N\/m) \/ Point Load (N)<br><\/strong>The load to which the profile is exposed is stated here. For evenly distributed load, the load is stated in N\/m (example 3,000 N\/m = 3KN\/m = approx. 300 kg\/m). Bending torque (Nm)<br><\/strong>Bending moment for the profile in Nanometers (maximum value).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Elongation (%)<br><\/strong>Profile elongation under load in percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In (<\/strong><strong>mm\u2074)<br><\/strong>The moment of inertia, which describes the stiffness of the profile in bending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Area (mm2)<br><\/strong>The cross-sectional area of the profile, the area of the actual cut surface when the profile is cut crosswise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Example<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can a 150 mm H-beam, braced at both ends, with a 4 m open span take a load of 300 kg\/m (total load of 4 m = 1.2 tons)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the calculator, select H-profile \u2013 Under Dimensions, select H-beam with H- 152 mm, B- 152 mm, T- 6.4 mm. From the Load Profile, select Loading case 2 \u2013 evenly distributed load.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under Length (m), enter 4 m, and under Distributed Load, enter 3000 N\/m (300 kg (kp) = 2943 N).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calculated deflection: 7 mm<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The recommended maximum deflection is 1:200 which for a 4 m open span gives a maximum permissible deflection of 20 mm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Conclusion:<\/strong>&nbsp;Calculated deflection is 7 mm. The openings allow light, air and water to pass through easily, which is important for applications where good ventilation and drainage are required. They are produced with a casting mold where bundles of fiberglass are laid in layers at a 90 degree angle. This provides a load-bearing capacity in both directions in the horizontal plane. Regardless of the way and manner in which the gratings are used, the strength will be distributed evenly across the grating.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1366\" height=\"1025\" src=\"https:\/\/glassfiber.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/9bc2cdf1-71ed-4570-aaa6-55da289945bd-1366x1025.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1579\" srcset=\"https:\/\/glassfiber.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/9bc2cdf1-71ed-4570-aaa6-55da289945bd-1366x1025.png 1366w, https:\/\/glassfiber.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/9bc2cdf1-71ed-4570-aaa6-55da289945bd-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/glassfiber.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/9bc2cdf1-71ed-4570-aaa6-55da289945bd.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1366px) 100vw, 1366px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Profile-based gratings<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Profile-based gratings are assembled together from longitudinal I-profiles. The profiles are produced by pultrusion and assembled together with transverse profiles that lock the I-profiles in position. Unlike cast gratings, profile-based gratings have load-bearing capacity in only one direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dimensions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The thickness of the grating and what we call profile thickness have a great impact on the strength of the grating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Thickness of grate<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have grates with thicknesses from 12mm all the way up to 51mm.<br>This undoubtedly has a high effect on the strength of the grating. The thickness you choose should be based on the load to be carried and the possible free span.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Profile thickness<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another dimension of the grating that determines the structural strength of the grating is the profile thickness. By profile thickness we mean the thickness that makes up the pattern on the grating, whether it is cast or profile-based gratings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Profile pattern and opening<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our cast gratings are designed with what we refer to as a profile pattern. This pattern is available in a number of different dimensions, and the combination of these dimensions and the profile thickness has a major impact on the strength and load-bearing capacity of the grating.<br><br>When we talk about openings, we are talking about our profile-based gratings. This is a good tool if you are unsure.<br>on whether the given grating is strong enough for your needs.<br>Here is an example of a load calculation on one of our 38mm gratings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1198\" height=\"475\" src=\"https:\/\/glassfiber.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/ca2c8a19-5554-4ea9-8188-38284198c78d-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2033\" srcset=\"https:\/\/glassfiber.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/ca2c8a19-5554-4ea9-8188-38284198c78d-1.png 1198w, https:\/\/glassfiber.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/ca2c8a19-5554-4ea9-8188-38284198c78d-1-768x305.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1198px) 100vw, 1198px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may look a little complicated, but we&#039;ll do our best to explain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Open span<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the left side of the table you will see a list of open spans, i.e. the opening between underlying beams or supporting structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Load<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The white numbers in the yellow field at the top are the load given in kN (kiloNewton). 1kN = 100kg.<br>When we say load, we are talking about the weight that the grating must withstand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the left side of the table we refer to two different types of load, \u0394U and \u0394C.<br>\u0394U is the load evenly distributed per square meter, and \u0394C is the concentrated load per meter or line load on 1 meter. This says something about how the load is applied to the grating. \u0394 stands for Delta and in physics means change. In this case, the change the grating makes when a load is applied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bending<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The numbers in the middle of the table are how much the grating bends in mm. Take for example an open span of 800mm. Here we see that if we subject it to 8kN, it will bend 4.5mm with a uniformly distributed load (\u0394U) and 8.8mm with a concentrated load per meter (\u0394C).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Max and recommended load<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the far right of the table you can see the maximum recommended load and the breaking load. By recommended load we mean the load that Glassfiber Produkter AS, together with advice from the manufacturer, recommends. Breaking load is the load that the grating can withstand before it breaks in two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Binder<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we have<a href=\"https:\/\/glassfiber.no\/en\/professional-articles\/glassfiber-fremtidens-produkter\/\">&nbsp;explained in this article about what fiberglass is and what it is made of<\/a>, binder is one of the components of fiberglass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have gratings that consist of one of four different binders. All binders provide high strength, long life, and fire retardant properties; but some binders can also provide additional properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Orthopolyester<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Orthopolyester offers a good balance between performance and cost, with sufficient chemical resistance for a variety of applications and good mechanical strength. This type is well suited for water treatment, architectural applications, and general industrial use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Isopolyester<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Isopolyester offers good chemical resistance and weathering durability, making it a good choice for both outdoor and industrial applications where moderate exposure to chemicals occurs. Gratings using Isopolyester are cost-effective and offer solid strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Vinyl ester<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vinyl ester binder is distinguished by its superior chemical resistance, especially against acids and strong alkaline chemicals. Vinyl ester is ideal for use in extremely corrosive environments found in the chemical industry. The gratings also have excellent mechanical properties and durability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Phenol<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phenolic gratings are known for their exceptional fire resistance and low smoke emission, making them a preferred choice for fire-prone areas such as offshore and tunnels. They have good chemical resistance and contribute to increased safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"980\" height=\"980\" src=\"https:\/\/glassfiber.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/samling-rist-980x980-1.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2032\" srcset=\"https:\/\/glassfiber.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/samling-rist-980x980-1.webp 980w, https:\/\/glassfiber.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/samling-rist-980x980-1-150x150.webp 150w, https:\/\/glassfiber.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/samling-rist-980x980-1-768x768.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 980px) 100vw, 980px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Gratings with different types of binder, most often indicated by the color of the grating.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Surface<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The surface of the gratings can also be available in different variants that are suitable for different uses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Non-slip surface with finely divided sand<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A surface with finely divided sand provides the highest friction and is our most slip-resistant surface. This is our standard surface and a good choice if you want high safety against slipping over a long period of time. Well suited for applications where deposits or fouling can occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Arc-shaped\/concave surface<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An arched surface occurs naturally during the casting process. This provides good slip resistance and, compared to a sand surface, is easier to keep clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Grating with plate<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our gratings are available with a typical 3 mm plate covering the grid pattern. The grating then has a tight surface that can be used where, for example, water or other things need to be prevented from falling through the grating. The plate surface is supplied with finely divided sand as an anti-slip or with a teardrop plate pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Smooth surface<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our final option is a smooth surface on both sides of the grating. This is only available for our 12mm thick gratings. Typically used for protection against moving machinery or rotating equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1366\" height=\"1025\" The solution is based on cast gratings with a glued plate on one side and a tread\/tear plate pattern that provides a non-slip surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Construction of dense grating decks<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For tight grating decks, use article no. 15039 (grey colour) or 15040 (yellow colour) with standard plate size 1.22 \u00d7 3.66 m and height 38 mm. The plates are cut to size and placed next to each other during assembly with a gap between the plates of 3\u20135 mm. For the upstand towards the wall and the skirting board at the railing, an angle profile in fiberglass is used, which is bolted down to the grating deck. Transitions are sealed with elastic sealant. An alternative is to use an F-profile (article no. 11431) in fiberglass around the grating deck.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:61px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-luminous-vivid-amber-background-color has-background\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Adaptation to arches and irregular geometries<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In projects with curved platforms or round pools \/ tubs, the grating deck is cut to meet the curvature. To follow the curvature, a 3 mm fiberglass plate with a typical height of 140 mm is used, which is mounted to the cut surface of the grating deck and grouted tightly. The plate is supported at the bottom of the remaining deck with corresponding 3 mm fiberglass plate pre-adjusted in arc segments using CNC machining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Drainage and penetrations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grate covers can be installed with a slope for drainage. Standard plastic drainage pots can be installed on the underside to collect spills and washing water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pipe penetrations or other technical penetrations in the grating are drilled or cut and grouted with elastic grout. Fiberglass is easy to process at the installation site with hand tools such as a circular saw, angle grinder, jigsaw or hole saw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Applications in practice<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fiberglass grating covers are used where equipment and instruments located on the underside of a platform or mezzanine need to be protected from possible spills from the overhead deck.
