Gigante Salmon opens new facility with fiberglass walkways

The exciting land-based fish farming facility finally started production in 2024 and the first pool is fully operational. The location presents challenges in terms of corrosion, but Gigante Salmon has solved this problem with the help of fiberglass.

Pools in the middle of the island

Gigante Havbruk, which is Gigante Salmon's largest owner, are experts in salmon farming with experience dating back to 1988. Gigante Salmon has built a land-based salmon farming facility on Lille Indre Rosøya in Rødøy Municipality. The facility, which has been named Gigante Salmon Rødøy, will consist of 3 production ponds that will be used to farm salmon for food production.

Work on the island began in 2021 and the first pool was ready to receive fish at the beginning of 2024, while work on pools 2 and 3 continues.

The first pool has a surface area of 8,000 m², while the next two will be 7,000 m² and 13,000 m² respectively and will be used for food fishing.

This means that we are talking about large areas of seawater in which the fish live, and in order for the workers at the facility to be able to take care of the salmon, access is required across the pools.

Countless meters of walkways

The salmon will be cared for, fed and the pool will be operated by the island staff. Having walkways that provide easy access to travel across the pools is therefore essential for Gigante Salmon.

The choice of material to be used for the walkways above the first pool at the facility mainly fell on fiberglass.

Over 800 meters of walkways have now been installed above the pool, most of which consists of fiberglass.

The walkways consist of gratings, railings, fastening materials for cabinets and cable management systems for various pipes and wires that run around the facility.
It is a complete solution including design and installation that is provided by us at Glassfiber Produkter AS.

So many walkways were delivered that even Gigante Salmon had to brag a little on social media.

Corrosion? Not with fiberglass

The facility, which is Rødøy Municipality's first land-based food fish facility, is located on a small island in the middle of the ocean. The location offers varying weather conditions and there is seawater in the water tanks and in the air.
In other words, it is a recipe for corrosion.

The choice of material is therefore incredibly important, and a large part of the reason why the choice fell on fiberglass.
Fiberglass is naturally corrosion-free as it does not contain any form of metal or other elements that are susceptible to corroding.

Practical solutions everywhere

After our delivery of the walkways, Gigante Salmon has used fiberglass in several places around the facility.
Among other things, fiberglass gratings are used as a walking surface over a work raft that is used for storing equipment, offices and sleeping accommodations for the employees at the facility.
The gratings are attached to a metal frame that extends from land to the raft.
A simple solution, which shows how easily the fiberglass material can be implemented in various situations. Fiberglass is galvanically neutral, which means that it does not react with other metals, which can cause what we call galvanic corrosion.

When we spoke with Technical Manager Kristian Aanes, this was one of the points he highlighted when we asked him about his experiences with fiberglass.

The fact that we can more easily join fiberglass with other parts gives us much less headache when it comes to design and joining, he says.

Recommended further

Kristian has previous experience in the marine industry and knows how much time and money is spent on maintenance and replacement of materials. By using fiberglass walkways, Gigante Salmon does not have to worry about maintenance such as painting and other rust treatments, which saves them a lot of time and money.
Kristian can therefore safely recommend the fiberglass material.

I would recommend Fiberglass products to others in the same industry, and indeed to anyone who needs good quality walkways and is concerned about corrosion and rust. Then [fiberglass] is a good way to avoid that.

With solutions from Glassfiber Produkter AS, Gigante Salmon Rødøy has walkways that will be with them for the entire life of the facility.
