Glassfiber Products has delivered a new, road-resistant bridge at Kvernaland – the first of its kind in all of Norway! The bridge replaces the old wooden bridge over the Frøylandsbekken stream, and will be a much better alternative for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.

Closed road and corroded bridge

The residents of Frøylandsbekken in Kvernaland faced some challenges. Due to construction work in the area, the road is closed, which would have prevented access to the county road. All houses must be accessible to residents and service and emergency vehicles. This is where Glassfiber Products comes into play.

"We have produced a bridge made of fiberglass," explains project manager Magnar Stangeland. "The fiberglass makes the bridge lightweight. The bridge is designed for 10 tons of axle load, and has been checked for 18 tons of bogie load. In addition, the fiberglass is maintenance-friendly and corrosion is avoided."

The residents will use the new bridge to reach the county road. But where will the bridge be? Over the Frøylandsbekken stream was the old bicycle bridge, a bridge marked by rot and corrosion. The condition of the bridge was so bad that the bridge has now been demolished. This opened up a perfect location for the new fiberglass bridge.

Here the bridge is being hoisted into place. The low weight ensured a quick and easy move.

Killing two birds with one stone

The bridge will be a solution to two problems. Residents will have easy access to the county road, while service and emergency vehicles will be able to reach it when needed. The bridge will function this way until the old road reopens. After that, the bridge will be used by pedestrians and cyclists.

“I hope the residents of Kvernaland will like the new bridge,” adds Stangeland. “Now they have a solid and safe bridge that is also non-slip.”

Easy to handle

The bridge's low weight made it possible to transport it with a crane truck. A heavier bridge would have required a large crane, but the four-ton bridge was lifted and transported without any problems. Down by the stream, it took no more than 5-10 minutes of lifting before the bridge was in place. Please watch the video of the assembly below.

Fast and accurate

Fiberglass Products have used CNC machine in the production of the bridge. The CNC machine processes the fiberglass profiles faster and with a high degree of accuracy. Here is a brief summary of the bridge's features:

  • Strong to drive (designed for 10 tons of axle load)
  • Low weight
  • Easy to assemble
  • Maintenance-friendly
  • No corrosion
